Certificate

PhD students of the KLI receive a certificate on completion of the entire regular KLI curriculum. The regular KLI curriculum in 4 years comprises:

  • a minimum of 16 EC in 4 years*, including the 2 compulsory basic courses ’Introduction to KLI’ and ’How to Publish and Review’.
  • Supervision of dissertation by a member of the KLI faculty
  • Participation in the KLI dissertation series
  • Completion and successful defense of the PhD thesis
  • Completion of the final evaluation form

To  start completing this proces, please fill in this form, and the Teaching Administration will assist you further.

*For PhD students in a 3 year program, the minimum is 12 EC. For PhD students in a 3.5 year program, the minimum is 14 EC.

Certificate for PhD students in the SCOOP program

PhD students who are in the SCOOP program and who are KLI members can receive a KLI certificate upon completion of the joint SCOOP-KLI curriculum.

This joint curriculum for these PhD students comprises:
• a minimum of 16 EC in 4 years, including:
- 7.5 EC in the SCOOP program (you will receive a certificate from SCOOP).
- 2.5 EC for the 2 KLI compulsory basic courses ‘How to Present’ and ‘Introduction to KLI’;
- 6 EC of KLI courses other than the 2 compulsory courses.
• Supervision of dissertation by a member of the KLI faculty
• Participation in the KLI dissertation series
• Completion and successful defense of the PhD thesis
• Completion of the final evaluation form.

If the SCOOP KLI PhD students wish to take a free choice course as mentioned below, this should take part in the 6 EC part other than the 2 compulsory KLI courses.

Free choice courses

Given the fact that different PhD students are likely to have different needs, PhD students are allowed to take a maximum of 4 EC out of 16 EC outside the KLI, as free choice courses to count for your KLI certificate. To be eligible for the KLI certificate, a free choice course
(a) needs to be taught at the PhD student level,
(b) by a recognized research school in the Netherlands (so no Internet courses), and
(c) needs to be approved of by the KLI teaching committee.
You can make a request by filling in this form. The KLI teaching committee will handle your request and will inform you. After finalizing this external course, you need to send a proof of attendance or a certificate to KLI.admin@uu.nl, otherwise these EC cannot count towards the total curriculum.
Do note that the KLI does not cover any possible costs associated with an external course.

ECTS

As from 2013-2014 the KLI is using the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System, 1 credit = 28 hours) for all activities in the teaching program. Hence, the criteria for acquiring the KLI certificate have changed in this respect.

The KLI offers a program of coursework, consisting of about 25 courses and workshops each year. The average number of EC offered each year lies between 20-25. Each year PhD students can select, in consultation with their supervisors, which courses (obligatory and elective) they wish to attend.            To obtain the KLI certificate, a minimum of 16 EC needs to be completed in 4 years. As not all PhD programs take 4 years, PhD students in a 3,5-year program need to complete a minimum of 14 EC, and PhD students in a 3-year program need to complete a minimum of 12 EC. In all cases, the basic courses ’Introduction to KLI’ and ’How to Publish and Review’ are compulsory.

Please note that EC will only be appointed after participation in an entire course or workshop.
